5 Things to Sort Out Before You Request Funding

5 Things to Sort Out Before You Request Funding

Submitting a funding request takes about two minutes. But the quality of what comes back depends heavily on what you know about your own situation going in. Here are the five things worth sorting out first.

1. The real number you need

Not a ballpark — the actual figure. Add up the expense, the payoff amounts, or the project quotes. Requesting more than you need means paying interest on money that sits idle; requesting less means coming back for a second round. Both are avoidable with ten minutes of arithmetic.

2. What you can actually afford monthly

Take your monthly take-home income, subtract your fixed obligations (housing, utilities, insurance, existing payments, groceries), and look honestly at what's left. A payment that fits on paper but leaves zero margin will hurt the first month anything unexpected happens. Leave yourself room.

3. Where your credit stands

You don't need a perfect score, but you should know roughly where you are before providers look. Most banks and card issuers now show your score for free. Knowing your range sets realistic expectations about the rates you're likely to see — and if you spot an error on your report, disputing it before you request funding is far better than after.

4. Your documentation

Providers that move forward with you will typically want proof of income (pay stubs or bank statements), a government-issued ID, and an active checking account. Having these ready turns a multi-day back-and-forth into a same-day step.

5. Your walk-away line

Decide in advance the maximum rate and payment you'll accept. Write it down. When options come back, you'll evaluate them against a number you chose calmly — not one you talked yourself into under pressure. And remember: reviewing matched options creates no obligation. If nothing clears your bar, walking away is a perfectly good outcome.

One honest note

No preparation guarantees approval — every provider makes its own decision based on its own criteria, and rates, terms, and availability vary. What preparation does is make sure that whatever options you're matched with reflect your real situation, so the decisions you make from there are solid ones.

When you've got your five answers, the request itself is the easy part. Two minutes, secure, free, no obligation.
